![]() Traditionally, performances last all night, beginning in the evening and ending at dawn and are always accompanied by a gamelan orchestra, creating a dynamic, multi-sensory experience. Each show teaches important morals and involves serious philosophical contemplation, while entertaining the audience at times with roaring humor and special action-packed scenes. Traditional performances are based on classical literature. Yet, more than mere puppetry, this is one of the highest forms of art in Indonesia. Wayang kulit performance of Indonesia is among the greatest story-telling traditions in the world and lies close to the heart of Javanese culture. Therefore, wayang kulit has been appointed as Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on Novemby UNESCO.The following information was prepared for the award-winning exhibition, Dancing Shadows, Epic Tales: Wayang Kulit of Indonesia, which was developed by the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico and was on display from Mathrough March 14, 2010. Especially in terms of content, wayang kulit stories always teach noble character, love and respect for each other, while sometimes inserting social criticism and funny roles through scenes. Every part in a wayang performance has a strong philosophical symbol and meaning. Wayang kulit is an Indonesian treasure that was born from the original culture of Indonesian people who love art. However, because many consider these offerings to be redundant, recently the offerings in wayang performances are also intended for the audience in the form of eating together. Offerings in the form of chicken, coffee, tumpeng rice, and other agricultural products, as well as the smoke from burning incense is always present in every puppet performance. As a magical traditional art, offerings or offerings are a mandatory element in every puppet show. In between the sounds of the gamelan, Javanese rhymes are sung, sung by female singers. While playing the puppet, the puppeteer is accompanied by music originating from a gamelan instrument. In the past, puppeteers were considered to be a noble profession, because the people who became masterminds were usually people who were respected, knowledgeable, and had good manners. Apart from having to be good at playing puppets, the puppeteer also has to know various stories of epic stories such as Mahabrata and Ramayana. The puppeteer cannot be played by just anyone. Wayang kulit is played directly by the narrator called the dalang. In order for the puppet movement to become dynamic, the elbows of the body are connected using screws made of buffalo horn. This type of puppet is made from dried buffalo skin. Wayang kulit is believed to be the roots of the various types of wayang that exist today. However, there are also people who say “wayang” comes from a performance technique that relies on shadows (bayang / wayang) on the screen. ![]() That said, “wayang” comes from the word “ma Hyang”, which means towards the spirituality of the power. More than just a show, wayang kulit was used as a medium for contemplation towards the spiritual spirits of the gods. Wayang kulit is one of the traditional arts that grows and develops in Javanese society.
